Softball sweeps GCC, Bay Path

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Late heroics and strong pitching helped the Albion College softball team win two games on Friday. Albion defeated Grove City 4-2 in game one before holding on for a 3-2 victory over Bay Path.

GAME ONE: Albion 4 Grove City 2

Jessie Anstandig drove in Albion's first run in game one – an unearned run off GCC. After Grove City plated two in the bottom of the fourth, the Britons scored three unanswered runs to take the lead for good. 

With two outs, Megan Maiuri and Parker Douglass smacked back to back singles. Lilly Zaskowski helped herself in the circle by driving in the tying run. In the top of the seventh, Kearney Miller and Natalie Kinney led off the inning with hits. After a sac bunt, Douglass played the role of hero with a two-run single to push Albion ahead 4-2. 

Zaskowski (3-2) went all seven innings, striking out five in the win.

GAME TWO: Albion 3 Bay Path 2

After Zaskowski got it done in the circle in game one, the sophomore got it done at the dish. Zaskowski's bases clearing triple in the second inning would be enough for Albion to hold on, claiming a 3-0 lead after two innings. 

Gabrielle Hirkaway (2-3) earned the win, striking out eight hitters in six innings of work. The senior allowed just one hit in her outing.

On Saturday, the Britons take on Brooklyn and Hilbert to conclude their spring trip.
