Softball sweeps on Saturday

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A stellar day at the plate gave the Albion College softball team plenty of runs in a sweep to wrap up the spring break trip. The Britons picked up a pair of run-rule victories over Brooklyn, 16-3 and Hilbert, 10-1.

Albion improves to 7-7 overall this season.

GAME ONE: Albion 16 Brooklyn 3

Backed by an 11-run first inning, the Britons were dominant from the start in game one. Parker Douglass started the scoring by doubling home Natalie Kinney. Later in the inning, both Rachel Horecki and Emma Schramm had two-run hits that helped Albion continue adding to its lead. Gabrielle Hirkaway delivered the final blow of the inning, seeing an 11-0 lead one frame in.

With two runs in the second, Albion scored two more in the bottom of the third. Douglass and Sydney Schoenborn recorded RBI singles to add to Albion's lead. The final run for the Britons came in the fourth inning when Rachel Potter drove in Jaden Henderson

As a team, the Brits crushed 16 hits and drew nine walks.

GAME TWO: Albion 10 Hilbert 1

Lilly Zaskowski and Kiersten Wilkin each went 3 for 4 in the win, seeing Wilkin drive in three runs. Douglass and Wilkin provided the Brits with runs in the first before Albion tacked on two more in the third.

Jessie Anstandig doubled and came around to score when Wilkin drove in her classmate. Horecki followed with a single to drive home Wilkin for a 4-0 advantage.

The Britons erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to walk off Hilbert in run-rule fashion. Megan Maiuri's double to left field plated two, ending the game early and allowing Albion to leave South Carolina with a sweep.

Zaskowski scattered just three hits in six innings of work, while striking out eight.

Albion will head to Heidelberg next Saturday for games at 1 and 3 p.m.
