Softball splits with regional power Transylvania

ALBION – Facing a Transylvania team that had just two losses coming into Sunday, the Albion College softball team split a pair of 1-0 games with the regional power. The Brits took game one before dropping the nightcap to close out their six game weekend.

GAME ONE: Albion 1 Transylvania 0

With two away, Lilly Zaskowski crushed a double to the warning track in dead center. Kearney Miller followed with a single up the middle, putting runners at the corners for Jessie Anstandig. The sophomore sent a single up the middle for an early 1-0 lead.

That one run would prove to be enough, as Zaskowski allowed just four Pioneer hits in the game. The sophomore struck out six hitters to keep the visitors off the bases. After fanning the first two batters of the seventh, Kiersten Wilkin tracked down a popup in foul ground to end the game for the Albion win.

GAME TWO: Transylvania 1 Albion 0

An unearned run by the Pioneers in the top of the sixth would prove to be enough, as the Brits left the tying run stranded at second in the bottom of the seventh.

Albion recorded just three hits in the game.

Gabrielle Hirkawway struck out eight hitters in the contest, allowing just five hits and walking none.

The Brits head to Calvin on Wednesday for a twinbill beginning at 3 p.m.
