Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball wins Calvin series

ALBION – With a split on Friday, the Albion College baseball team won the series against Calvin University. The Britons took game one 6-1 before a tough 7-6 loss in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Albion 6 Calvin 1

The Britons plated two in the bottom of the first and never looked back, backed by a strong start from Brayden Raether. Ryker Mazey doubled down the line and scored on a triple off the bat of Evan Schuster. One batter later, Albion took a 2-0 lead thanks to a sac fly from Austyn Stephens.

Freshman Gavin White drove a double deep to center in the fourth, bringing home Stephens and Kris Stojanovski for a 4-0 advantage. Calvin's lone run came in the top of the sixth, cutting the lead to 4-1.

In the seventh, Calvin threatened with two runners in scoring position and one away. Raether ended his terrific day on the bump with back to back strikeouts to preserve the lead. The Britons got two insurance runs in the eighth, with an error and a RBI double from Tyler Murphy

Zak Kelly struck out four hitters in relief, tossing two innings. All nine batters recorded a hit in the game, with White's two RBI pacing Albion.

GAME TWO: Calvin 7 Albion 6

The Knights struck for three runs in the second to take a quick lead in game two. In the home half of the inning, the Britons added a run, courtesy of an error by Calvin.

With Albion trailing 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Mazey lined a one-out double and scored on a two-error play off the bat of Braeden Emery. Emery – reaching on an error and scoring on a throwing error – slid home to cut the deficit to 5-3. Two batters later, Stephens hit an RBI groundout to second to cut the lead to 5-4.

An errant throw by the Knights on a sac bunt allowed the Britons to tie the game up at five in the bottom of the sixth.

After Calvin took a 6-5 lead, once again the Briton baserunners were able to scratch across a run. Drew Ribble worked a walk with two in scoring position, but a wild pitch on the final ball allowed Stojanovski to score. Calvin took the lead in the eighth and the Britons left the tying run in scoring position in the home half of the frame.

The Britons stole seven bags in the game, with Stojanovski and Ribble each recording two. White was 1 for 1, working three big-time walks in the game.

On Sunday, the Britons will host Bluffton for Senior Day. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
