Softball sweeps Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. – In a doubleheader that finished on Sunday, the Albion College softball team earned a sweep over The University of Olivet. The Britons took game one on Friday 11-0, before resuming game two after a weather delay Sunday. Albion rallied for a 6-5 win in the second game of the series.

GAME ONE: Albion 11 Olivet 0 (5 innings)

A five run first inning and four Olivet errors helped Albion secure the game one victory. Megan Maiuri started the scoring with an RBI groundout, and Parker Douglass followed with a double to right center for a 2-0 lead. Jessie Anstandig, Kiersten Wilkin and Dylan Cardinale hit back to back to back RBI singles to lead 5-0 after the top of the first.

Scoring a pair in the fourth, the Britons got RBI singles from Natalie Kinney and Maiuri to inflate the lead to 7-0. Albion vaulted over the run rule threshold in the fifth, striking for four more runs. Anstandig and Wilkin led off the frame with back to black doubles to lead 8-0.

With the bases loaded, Kayla Cole ripped a single up the middle to drive home Cardinale and Maiuri followed with a sac fly. Douglass capped off the scoring with a single to left and an 11-0 lead.

In the circle, Gabrielle Hirkaway allowed just one hit, striking out five batters to earn the win.

Maiuri drove in three runs, as Douglass and Wilkin each drove in a pair.

GAME TWO: Albion 6 Olivet 5

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, the Brits rallied for three runs against the Comets. Lilly Zaskowski led off with a double down the line and was lifted for pinch runner Hannah Petty. Wilkin smoked a double to drive in Petty and cut the deficit to one run.

Cardinale lifted a sac fly to drive in the second Albion run before Kearney Miller's pinch hit RBI single vaulted the Britons ahead, 3-2. The Comets struck the next inning for three runs, regaining the lead with a 5-3 margin.

Douglass led off the fifth with a double and Jaden Henderson replaced the senior as a pinch runner. Henderson came around to score when Anstandig singled the other way, bringing the Britons within a run.

In the sixth, the Brits used two hits and four Olivet errors to score two runs and take the lead for good. With the tying run on third, Hirkaway got the Olivet batter to strikeout, securing the MIAA sweep.

On Wednesday, Albion hosts Manchester for games beginning at 3 and 5 p.m.
