Schuster, Renner help baseball win Trine series

ANGOLA, Ind. – Another big day at the dish by Evan Schuster and two massive double plays induced by Drew Renner helped the Albion College baseball team win the series over Trine University. Trine won game one Sunday, 3-1, but the Britons rallied for a 9-7 victory in the rubber match.

Trine limited Albion's production in the first game of the day. Ryker Mazey accounted for three of Albion's five hits and drove in the lone run. The Brits left nine runners stranded in the first game, setting up a game three for the series.

The teams traded blows throughout the entire game in the nightcap. A fielder's choice and a sac fly from Mazey gave the Brits a 2-0 lead in the second, but Trine answered with a pair of runs themselves in the home half of the frame.

Albion put together a two out rally in the fourth inning, sparked by Kris Stojanovski hitting home Carson Dunn, who smacked a lead off two-bagger. Schuster followed with a double, driving in Stojanovski for a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Thunder clubbed a grand slam for a 6-4 lead.

Schuster drove in his second run of the game, helping Albion scratch across a run in the sixth. Albion took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning, as Gavin White led off the inning with a double. With two away, Mazey drove in White to tie the game at six. Fifth year Braeden Emery greeted Trine's new pitcher with a two run double down the line for an 8-6 advantage. He came around to score on an opposite field single off the bat of Stojanovski to lead 9-6.

With two on and one out, the Thunder threatened. Renner entered, getting Trine to roll into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. After Trine added a run in the ninth and had the winning run at the plate, Renner got another 6-4-3 to end the game and win the series.

Sean Cooper (1-1) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.1 innings. Renner picked up his second save of the season, hurling 2.2 innings for the Brits.

On Tuesday, the Brits head to Olivet for a regularly scheduled game and a makeup game. Albion will play the Comets at 2 p.m. in a 7-inning makeup from Apr. 2 before following with a 9-inning affair.
