Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's lacrosse wins sixth MIAA Tournament Championship

ALBION – For the sixth time in program history, the Albion College men's lacrosse team is the MIAA Tournament Champion.

On their home turf as the No. 3 seed, the Britons knocked off the No. 5 seed Trine Thunder, 11-5 on Friday. With the win, Albion earns the automatic bid into next week's NCAA Tournament.

Five points from senior Brendan Mercier and four goals from captain Cal Stearns powered Albion's offense for the win. After Trine scored first, Keegan Pastor got the Britons on the board off a pass from Andrew Miller. The hosts fired off three more goals by the end of the first quarter, thanks to two by Stearns and one from Mercier.

In the second, the Thunder cut the Briton lead to 4-3, but Mercier struck with less than a minute before the half to secure a 5-3 edge for Albion at the half. Only two goals were scored in the third period, one from Stearns and one from Mercier to lead 7-3 after three.

Trine came out swinging in the fourth, cutting the lead to 7-5. Regrouping after a timeout, Albion scored four unanswered – including two magnificent goals from Robbie Dameron

Sophomore goalie Caleb Howell was tremendous between the pipes, making nine saves in the victory. Freshman Connor Laidlaw put together a solid day at the X, winning 11 of 19 faceoffs and picking up eight ground balls. Fellow freshman Carter Kildea led the defense with five caused turnovers and six ground balls.

The Britons will find out who and where they play on Sunday during the NCAA selection show. More details will follow.
