Britons Get Struck by Thunder in Heartbreaking Fashion

ALBION, Mich. -- The Albion football team looked like they had a chance at the end of an eventful game.

In a contest that featured 35 combined points and five lead changes in the fourth quarter, Logan Grwinski lined up for a potential game-tying field goal from 23 yards out with six seconds left.

The low kick was blocked, ending any hope of a Briton victory, as Trine beat them 38-35 in both team's conference opener.

Albion scored 21 straight points to open their first home night game since 2019, as they got their first opening drive touchdown of the season on an Ali Murray 22-yard pass to Dilon Denison marching down the field in five plays.

Amarr Hunter also caught a 27-yard pass from Murray in the flat that he raced to the end zone for the Britons' second score with 6:50 left in the first.

Alex Trudell tacked on a two-yard rush for Albion's third touchdown to go up, 21-0, with just under four minutes left in the first half.

Trine added their first score on a 56-yard pass on the ensuing drive to cut the game to two possessions heading into the locker room.

From there, the Thunder rolled to 17 unanswered points, as they added up on a field goal, 10-yard pass and 57-yard pass to take their first lead, 24-21, with 12:52 left in the fourth.

The Britons answered on the ensuing drive with a one-yard rush from Trudell to take back the lead, 28-24, only for it to be snatched again three possessions later.

Trine thundered in from nine yards out to take a 31-28 lead with 2:10 to go, but then Olivet transfer Jaylan Johnson took the ensuing kickoff back 95 yards for the score to make it 35-31 with 1:57 left.

It was Albion's first kickoff return for a touchdown since 2021 when Brendan Teal took one back against Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The Thunder went straight to work, completing a 59-yard pass on their first play and punching it in from six yards out on the next to take the advantage again.

A Murray interception gave Trine the ball on the Britons' eight yard line, but the Thunder quarterback fumbled the ball on a handoff that Ryan Deibis recovered with 21 seconds left to give Albion some much-needed life.

After a Trudell rush and an incomplete pass to Denison, Grwinski lined up for the kick that was blocked.

Murray threw for 209 yards and two scores, but his three interceptions were drive killers for the Britons. Trudell ran for a game-high 114 yards and two touchdowns for his fourth consecutive 100-yard game.

Johnson led all Albion receivers with three catches for 67 yards, while Denison had four receptions to eclipse 100 for his career.

Adam Mills was all over the field, racking up 13 tackles, including three for a loss. Jaylan Johnson had nine hits, and Alex Olenik also notched his fourth straight game with at least a half-sack.

Albion had 24 first downs compared to Trine's 18, while both teams converted on just three third downs.
