ALBION, MI -- On a rainy Wednesday evening at Alumni Field, the Albion College women's soccer team battled hard but dropped a 1-0 decision against Capital University.
Capital applied plenty of pressure in the middle of the park, keeping Albion's offense stifled throughout the tilt. The Comets held a 17-7 edge in shots and earned eight corner kicks over teh course of 90 minutes.
The Britons broke through Capital's pressure in the 16th minute via
Mia Czarnowski. The sophomore collected a long pass over the top to break through Capital's back line. Czarnowski forced a save from Capital's Liv Alford who was charged out of the net to make the save. The ball found its way back to Czarnowski, but her second attempt just missed the left side of the net.
The Comets consistent influence in the midfield resulted in 12 shots across the first half, five of which were on target. Albion's
Maddie Welsh and the Britons' defense stood tall with five saves. In the 35th minute, Welsh turned away a dangerous attempt from outside the box to keep the score at 0-0.
Capital came flying out of the gates to start the second half. A scrum in front of Albion's goal resulted in Caitie Byars powering the ball past Welsh to give the Comets the advantage.
Albion continued to battle as time wound down. In the 83rd minute,
Abby O'Connell collected the ball on the right side of Capital's box. She rifled a shot, but was denied by Alford. The ball bounced back to O'Connell, but her second attempt clipped the side of the net.
O'Connell and Czarnowski each registered two shots apiece,
Chloe Salo,
Grace Halstead, and
Claire Gorno each tallied one.
