ALBION, Mich. — Michael Umeh found himself on a breakaway with 13 seconds left.
Up by one against Kalamazoo, the senior went airborne and threw down a thunderous dunk as the Kresge Gymnasium crowd erupted to put the nail in the coffin and seal a 74-71 victory over the Hornets.
The Britons found themselves in a 21-14 hole 10 minutes into the game but used a 12-4 run to take their first lead of the contest, 26-25, with 4:36 left on a
Dwayne Ray layup.
The advantage held for the rest of the half, as Albion was ahead 39-33 into the locker room.
Albion stretched their lead to eight, 48-40, early in the second. However, the Hornets slowly began to chip away at the advantage and then took their own lead, 58-57, with 7:56 remaining.
The Britons quickly regained the lead but lost it again a minute and a half later. They did not regain it until Ray made a jumper in the paint with 39 seconds remaining to go up 72-71.
After a timeout,
Tyler Davis made a key stop that led to Umeh's game-sealing dunk.
Malachi Hooser II tied his career high with 20 points, including hitting all three triples, while Umeh posted 18 points.
Mason Brodi (12) and
Dwayne Ray (11) also scored in double figures.
Before the game, Umeh and
Kam Mayes were honored on Senior Day.
