Stearns's Career Day Carries Britons in MIAA Opening Win at Alma

ALMA, Mich. — Cal Stearns was not kidding anyone with his performance on April Fools' Day.

The senior notched a career-high nine goals and totaled 12 points in Albion's 21-5 victory over Alma in their MIAA opener.

Stearns became the first Briton since 2022 to notch nine or more goals in a game (the program record is 10). Additionally, he tied the team record for points in a contest with 12 (Jace Conley did it three times, Ethan Rottell once).

Stearns found twine twice in the game's first 3:24, which set the tone for the Britons to outscore the Scots, 13-1, in the period.

He scored seven times in the time frame and also dished out an assist. Other scores came from Joey Pipeish, Luke Schuemann, Mathieu Champoux (2) and TJ Antonino (2).

The scoring slowed in the second, but Albion recorded all three goals in the stanza. Stearns, Logan Mozingo and Jack Holway each scored to make it 16-1 at the intermission.

Stearns added his final goal and 12th point with 7:01 left in the third, as the Britons increased their advantage to 21-2 at the period's end.

The Scots got three goals of their own in the fourth.

Eight different players scored for Albion, including Schuemann and Champoux who each had hat tricks.

The Britons outshot Alma, 57-24, and forced 33 Scots turnovers. Albion was a perfect 22-for-22 on clears and picked up 52 ground balls which tied a season high.
