HOLLAND, Mich. — The Albion baseball team dropped the opener but responded with a gritty game-two victory to split Saturday's MIAA doubleheader at Hope, moving to 16–14 on the season.
Game 1
Albion struck first in game one, but a late surge wasn't enough in a 14–6 setback.
In the first inning, Evan Schuster set the tone with a lead-off home run to left, and later in the frame Gavin White came through with a sacrifice fly situation on a wild pitch that allowed another run to score, giving Albion a 2–0 lead. The Britons added a third run in the third inning when White lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Schuster to make it 3–1.
Albion continued to battle in the sixth, putting up three runs to pull within 7–6. Tyler Murphy scored on a sacrifice fly from Lucas Payne, Logan Farmer came in on an RBI single to right by Jonjay Arreazola that turned into extra bases on an outfield error, and White drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Arreazola.
The Britons finished with 10 hits in the opener. Arreazola led the way with a 3-for-4 day with an RBI and a run scored, while Schuster went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs, and a walk. White reached base three times and drove in two runs, and Murphy and Farmer each added a hit and scored once. Quinn Lewis started and worked 4.0 innings, and Jack Renner covered 4.0 innings out of the bullpen.
Game 2
The Britons bounced back in game two, winning a 10–9 shootout behind a 10-hit, 10-run performance and error-free defense.
Albion's offense was patient and productive, combining its 10 hits with 11 walks to consistently pressure the Hope pitching staff. The Britons spread the production throughout the lineup, with Schuster, White, and Max Holser among those driving the offense and continuing their strong days at the plate.
On the mound, Murphy delivered in a high-leverage relief role to secure the win. The right hander worked 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and no walks while recording three strikeouts, retiring the side in the ninth to close out the one-run victory.
