CALEDONIA, Mich. — The Albion baseball team was not able to keep up with the MIAA's No. 1 team, as they fell to Kalamazoo, 7-1 and 12-7, in a doubleheader that was rescheduled and took place at Davenport outside Grand Rapids.
Game 1
The Hornets scored first on a double in the opening frame and plated two more runs in the third on a sacrifice fly and fielder's choice.
Albion got their only run in the fifth courtesy of a
Jack LaPorte sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-1.
However, Kalamazoo would add to more to their total on a wild pitch and another sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
The Britons' greatest chance offensively came in the sixth when they loaded the bases with two outs. After a Hornet pitching change, Kalamazoo forced a
Drew Ribble groundout to end the threat.
Kalamazoo posted their final two runs in the seventh on an error and single. Each of the Britons' nine batters in the last third of the game were retired.
Despite the loss, Albion outhit Kalamazoo, 6-5, but committed five errors compared to none from the Hornets.
Daniel Bruzdewicz took the loss after pitching seven innings, and
Zak Kelly threw the final inning and got out unscathed.
Game 2
In a much more offensive-friendly second game, Kalamazoo once again started off the scoring with a single in the first. Albion did take the lead in the second with two runs, courtesy of a
Tyler Bronczyk single and Ribble sacrifice fly.
However, the advantage was short lived as the Hornets plated a three-run triple and an RBI single to take a 5-2 lead.
The Britons cut the deficit to two in the third on an error, but Kalamazoo answered right back with a sacrifice fly in the home half of the frame.
Albion inched their way to within one in the fourth on a
Jonjay Arreazola sacrifice fly and
Gavin White hit by pitch with the bases loaded. The score remained stagnant until the sixth with the Hornets plated another run on a groundout. They left their mark on the game with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to seal the win.
Albion got two more in the ninth on a White double and
Carter Stahl single, but it was too little too late.
Just like in Game 1, Stahl was the only Briton to notch multiple hits. Also identical to the first game, Albion committed five errors in the field.
Quinn Lewis took the loss on the bump and pitched the game's first three innings.
Miles Frank and
Ian Balint shared the contest's final five frames.
