ALBION, Mich. — Despite an eighth inning lead, the Albion baseball team could not fend off D3baseball.com's No. 12 team Kalamazoo as they lost to the Hornets, 10-7.
The Britons allowed just one base runner in the first three innings of the game until Kalamazoo opened it up with three runs in the fourth. The leadoff batter in the frame started it off with a solo homer, and the Hornets also scored later on a fielder's choice and single.
Albion inched closer in the home half of the frame on a
Logan Farmer single and
Tyler Murphy groundout to make it 3-2.
They took the lead with a five-run fifth inning as
Carter Stahl started the run with a single to knot the score. From there, Albion got all four of their remaining runs on bases loaded walks on 3-2 counts and took a 7-3 advantage.
The Hornets added a score in the sixth on a double and posted two more in the seventh on a single and sacrifice fly.
A Caleb Moore two-run homer with two outs in the eighth proved to be the winning play for the Hornets. They tacked on two more in the ninth on a single to end any threat by the Britons.
Stahl went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Albion offense.
Brendan Schultz pitched a solid 5.2 innings to start the game, allowing six hits and four runs with a career-high 10 strikeouts.
Miles Frank and Murphy also saw time on the mound.
