Stephen Wasil, ’06, who quarterbacked Albion College to the 2005 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship as the league’s Offensive Most Valuable Player & played professionally in the Arena Football League, was promoted to offensive coordinator on Dec. 1, 2018.

In 2021, he was key to Albion winning the MIAA Title for the second consecutive year. Six Brits received All-MIAA honors on offense, headlined by Justin Thomas becoming an All-American and the MIAA Offensive MVP. Jack Bush continued his dominance under center, with Wasil being critical to the success and development of the quarterbacks.

He returned to the Britons in 2013 as the assistant coach in charge of quarterbacks and receivers. Wasil helped implement an uptempo spread offense and the Britons averaged a league-best 425 yards in the six games against MIAA rivals . Quarterback Dominic Bona was an all-MIAA first team pick and receiver Zach Brewer achieved all-MIAA second team recognition. Bona was MIAA Offensive MVP and an all-MIAA first team pick in 2015. In the 2021 spring season, he mentored quarterback Jack Bush to MIAA Offensive MVP and first team honors.

The 2018 unit averaged 534 yards and 44 points per game. Quarterback Kyle Thomas set the single-game school records for total yards and passing yards in the Sept. 8 victory over Franklin, Ind., College.

Albion led the MIAA in total offense five times (2013-15, 2018, 2021) since Wasil joined the coaching staff.

Wasil was a two-time All-MIAA performer as a Briton, achieving second team status in 2004 and rising to first team in 2005.

Wasil, who prepped at Detroit Catholic Central and was inducted into the Catholic League’s Hall of Fame in 2006, still holds the Albion records for passing yards in a career (6,018) and season (3,313 in 2005). He also holds the school standard with 62 career touchdown passes, including 33 during the 2005 campaign. Wasil was on the 2001 Division 1 State Championship team.

Wasil joined the Kansas City Command for the 2011 season and he started the final five games.  During those five games with the Command, he completed 63% of his passes for 1,385 yards and 26 touchdowns.

A starter in 14 games for the AFL’s Tampa Bay Storm in 2012, Wasil rushed for 19 touchdowns to rank second in the league. He finished the 2012 season completing 60 percent of his passes for 3,664 yards and 71 touchdowns.

Wasil and his wife Sarah have two children, Amelia Jane and Brady Slamer.
