ALBION, Mich. – Albion College was fortunate that Calvin College came away empty on its first half scoring chances in their Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's soccer match at Alumni Field. The second half was different, however, as Calvin cashed in and it sent Albion to a 4-1 setback.
Calvin outshot Albion, 6-0, in the opening 45 minutes, but the game was scoreless because goalkeeper Brian Greathouse (Dearborn)made two saves and a Briton defender cleared a ball near the goal line.
Calvin continued the offensive pressure in the second half and it scored three times in the first 12 minutes. Zach Willis dished out an assist on Dino Duratovic's third goal of the season, and Willis later tacked on his fifth goal of the season. Chris Nance also buried a penalty kick.
Albion mounted a rally with five shots. Jimmy Nieman (Rochester Hills/Rochester) scored for the third consecutive match when he collected his fifth goal of the season in the 58th minute.
Greathouse finished the contest with five saves, and the Briton defenders cleared three shots near the goal line.
Albion, 5-4-1 overall and 2-3 against MIAA rivals, will play its next two matches on the road, visiting Alma College Oct. 5 and Hope College Oct. 8.
