Simon Scores For Britons

Box Score

ALBION – Jonathan DeVries got his head on the ball that had been popped high in the air by an Albion College defender with a little less than 18 minutes to play and that was the difference as Hope College eked out a 2-1 victory over the Britons in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action.

Hope had controlled most of the possession in the second half as Albion tried to wait for opportunities to counter attack. The Britons tried to play the ball to forwards Kyle Alsheskie and Mike Tolkacz. Tolkacz's shot was stopped by Hope goalkeeper Ben Lemmen with nine minutes to play. Defender Charles Micunek got his head on a corner kick with less than four minutes to play, but the attempt was blocked by the Hope defense.

Albion took the early lead when Destin Simon placed a free kick in front of the goal. The Hope goalkeeper fell into the goal while holding the ball.

Hope scored the equalizer less than five minutes later as Gavin Midlam produced the goal.

The Flying Dutchmen finished with a 14-8 advantage in shots, but the margin in shots on goal was just 5-4.

Albion will entertain MIAA rival Kalamazoo at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
