Albion To Play For MIAA Tournament Berth

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College will play for a berth in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Tournament when it takes the field in Grand Rapids for its Nov. 5 regular season finale after it scored a 1-0 victory over Adrian College on Saturday.

The victory, coupled with losses by Alma College and Kalamazoo College, moves Albion (5-6-2 against league rivals) into the fourth place in the league standings. Albion does not have an easy foe in the regular season finale as it will oppose the Calvin College side sitting atop the MIAA table.

"We talked a few weeks ago about how we wanted the final regular season game to be for a berth in the MIAA Tournament," Albion Coach Jerry Block said. "It will take our best game to beat Calvin, but we're looking forward to the challenge."

Albion was determined to stop Adrian forward Nick Minshall, the MIAA's third-leading goal scorer, Saturday. The back line led by Clayton Cole and Charles Micunek limited Minshall to one shot as the Britons gained their third shutout in the last four contests. Kieran O'Keefe, Albion's first-year goalkeeper, needed to make only two saves.

"To get another shutout was impressive because it takes the entire team to get that done," Block said. "Charles and Clayton did a great job against their dynamic forward."

Micunek, in fact, assisted on the only goal of the contest. First-year midfielder Michael Reitmyer struck for his third goal of the season in the first half.
