Box Score NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Bidding to draw even in the match, Albion College let an 18-13 lead slip away in the second set and the Britons went on to fall to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Saint Mary's College in three sets.
Jessica Konieczny blocked Saint Mary's attacks on consecutive points as Albion reeled off a three-point run to build a 13-10 lead in the first set. Konieczny knocked down a kill as the Britons continued to lead, 14-11, midway through the set.
Saint Mary's forged a tie at 15-15 and Colleen Kilgallon produced a pair of kills to lead the Belles on a five-point run as they surged to a 20-16 lead. Saint Mary's went on to win the set, 25-19.
Stephanie Thurner dropped two kills and Kristen Beyer served up an ace as Albion scored five consecutive points to earn a 17-12 lead in the second set. Another Thurner kill pushed the Albion lead to 18-13.
Meaghan Gibbons went back to serve for Saint Mary's after a side out and the Belles scored the next eight points to erase the Albion lead. Gibbons served up two aces and Melanie Kuczek provided a pair of blocks.
Saint Mary's went on to win the second set, 25-22, and it closed out the match in the third, 25-14.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Outwater had one of the best matches of her young collegiate career with 13 kills and 12 digs. She hit .294 for the match with three errors in 34 attacks.
Thurner finished with nine kills.
Albion will go in search of its first win of the season at 1 p.m. Sunday when it returns to Kalamazoo College to makeup a contest that was postponed when the Friday night storm knocked out the power in the Hornets' Anderson Athletic Center.
