ALBION, Mich. – Twelve Albion College players scored goals as the Britons dominated an undermanned Calvin squad, 22-0, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's lacrosse contest at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.
The Britons put up a season high in goals while earning their first shutout since a 31-0 blowout of Defiance College on Feb. 23, 2013. Albion, the only unbeaten team in league play, is 7-4 overall and 3-0 in MIAA conference play.
"Coming into a game like this it's about our upperclassmen and how focused they want to be. We talked about always playing a good game," Head Coach Jake DeCola said.
Seniors Tim Urso and Alexander Dziewit led the Briton attack. Urso recorded six points on four goals and two assists and Dziewit contributed with four points on two goals and two assists. Zach Hubbell also scored four points on three goals and an assist.
"Those guys [Urso and Dziewit] show up every day," DeCola said. "They are very consistent for us and they dictate the flow of any game we play. We rely on Tim and Alex to set the tone of the game."
Along with the goal scoring, Albion's physical defense was exceptional. Goalkeeper Kyle Formanczyk stopped two shots before being relieved by Brandon Tata midway through the second quarter. Jordan Hempfling logged minutes in the fourth quarter. The goalkeepers were not busy most of the day because the defense collected 33 turnovers.
"The biggest change we made with the defense here in the last couple days is we have had assistant coach Brett Wetzel working with some of the guys a little bit more lately," DeCola said. "He has done a fantastic job getting them re-focused," Decola said. "I give all the credit to coach Wetzel."
While Urso and Dziewit set the tone for the offense, five Britons scored their first collegiate goals. Drew Harm produced a hat trick and excited the crowd with a dance after his first career goal. Also scoring their first goals were John Cooke, Aaron McCann, Charlie Hermes, and Austin Serverson.
"One of our game plans is too play fast for the entire contest. We did that early and it freed us up to get some younger guys in there," DeCola said.
Next up for Albion is a Tuesday night non-league home date against the College of Wooster.
