Box Score ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Cameron Braun scored with 58 seconds left to lift Albion College to a 13-12 victory over Augustana College in a NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship first round match.
With the win, Albion (13-5 overall) is one of 16 teams remaining in the tournament. Albion advances to a Saturday second round contest at third-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University.
Joe Braley, Tim Urso and Kyle DeCamp scored as Albion seized a 12-9 lead with 12:42 left in regulation.
Kevin Gleason scored goals a minute apart and Colin Haley scored as Augustana forged a tie with 5:23 left.
It was a duel of the goalkeepers from that point as Albion's Kyle Formanczyk and Augustana's Jack Peters took turns making saves.
In fact, Formanczyk's ground ball pickup with two minutes left gave Albion possession for the winning goal. He stole a pass as Augustana tried to set up the offense behind the goal.
Joel Hedemark took the initial shot, but he wound up hitting the post. Albion retained possession and Alexander Dziewit found Braun open at the crease. Braun made a move to get Peters off balance and he rattled in a shot off the right post.
Jonathan Bryk and Scott Davis scored 2 ½ minutes apart as Augustana forged a 3-1 lead midway through the first quarter. Zach Hubbell provided Albion's response – scoring three times – and Tim Urso scored his second goal of the first quarter as the Britons surged to a 5-3 lead.
Dziewit and Urso scored 38 seconds apart as Britons extended the margin to 7-4 midway through the second quarter. Bryk, Gleason and JP Palasek scored in a span of 2 ½ minutes as Augustana forged a 7-7 tie at halftime.
The third quarter featured a momentum swing. Dominic Hamper and Urso tacked on unassisted goals as Albion edged in front, 10-8, but Gleason and Davis scored as Augustana leveled the score at 10.
Albion controlled possession, winning 18-of-28 draws and holding a 59-30 edge in shots and a 39-21 edge in ground balls. The Britons may have had a more convincing victory if not for Peters' 18 saves.
DeCamp won 68 percent of the face-offs (15-of-22) and gained credit for 12 ground balls. Formanczyk pounced on seven ground balls and he finished with nine saves.
"Matt Spinney has a strong day, holding Davis to just one goal," Albion Head Coach Jake DeCola said. "Joe Silvestri had a strong day as we were perfect on the clear."
Urso struck for five goals to become Albion's single-season goal scoring leader with 53. He also tacked on an assist. Zach Hubbell chipped in with three goals and an assist.
"Tim played a huge game," DeCola said. "He was unstoppable and proved he is one of the top players in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association."
