GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cameron Braun scored six goals to pull within five of matching Albion College's all-time record in leading the Britons to a 17-6 victory over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Calvin College.
With the victory, Albion improved to 4-0 against MIAA rivals and gained sole possession of first place in the league when Alma College edged Hope College, 10-9, later in the day.
Albion ripped 15 shots in the first quarter, but Calvin goalkeeper Tristan Parece was up to the task, making five saves to hold the Britons scoreless.
Joel Schaefer produced a man-advantage goal late in the first quarter to give Calvin the early lead.
"Our guys were caught off guard early on because Calvin showed a lot of intensity and desire," Albion Head Coach Jake DeCola said.
Braun, Zach Hubbell and Dominic Hamper erupted for three goals apiece in the second quarter as Albion gained a 9-3 halftime lead.
"Dylan Neal (who dished out two assists in the quarter) was good and Braun found some rhythm," DeCola said.
Braun added three more, and Hubbell, Zach Kinney and David DiRado chipped in with goals as Albion extended the margin to 15-4 by the end of the third. Braun has 132 career goals as he chases Tim Urso who produced 137 as a Briton.
"DiRado and Dominic played well together once they got going and Matt Lowes had a very good day guarding a very strong player in Chris Griffin (who finished with a goal and two assists for Calvin)."
John Cooke and Kyle DeCamp scored in the fourth.
DeCamp won 21-of-26 face-offs to keep Albion in command of possession. While DeCamp was not awarded ground balls for his face-off wins, Albion still finished plus-19 on the box score. Five Britons were credited with four ground balls.
DeCola said goalkeeper Brad Bogus "made some stellar saves" and allowed four goals before giving way to Brandon Tata in the fourth quarter.
Albion will play the second of three straight road games Saturday when it travels to Trine University.
