ALBION, Mich. – Albion College racked up 749 yards of total offense – most by a NCAA Division III team so far this season – as it rolled to a 79-7 victory over Concordia (Wis.) University.
The Britons 79 points are also second-most by a D-III team this season. Saint John's (Minn.) University put up 98 in its Sept. 2 victory over St. Scholastica.
Albion scored on its first six possessions, and on seven of the eight times it had the ball in the first half. Kyle Thomas threw for a pair of touchdowns (78 yards to Marlon Martin and 50 yards to Collin Poore) and he ran for another from 11 yards out.
El'Verson Mitchell and Patrick Czarnecki each had 2-yard touchdown runs, Zach Serzo added a 9-yard touchdown run and Andrew Fabry kicked a 39-yard field goal as Albion led 45-0 at halftime.
The defense produced points early in the third quarter as Michael Harvey stepped in front of a Dalton Poole pass and streaked down the sideline 78 yards for a touchdown.
Czarnecki scored his second TD of the day on a 5-yard run in the third quarter.
Doug Freeman (24 yards) and Kole Hollenbeck (17 yards) added touchdown runs for the Britons, and Sam Blanzy hooked up with Tyler Sykes for a 5-yard score.
Albion's yards were balanced – 477 through the air and 269 on the ground. Thomas completed 20-of-26 passes for 344 yards, while Blanzy was 9-of-13 for 126 yards. Thomas added 62 yards on the ground.
Sean Koski was the top receiver, hauling in six passes for 105 yards.
The defensive line had a big day with five sacks. Sean Kubit-Miller wrapped up 2 ½ sacks for 16 yards, and Tyler George was credited with a pair of tackles for loss.
Albion, now 1-2 on the year, will enjoy a bye week before its first competition against a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opponent – a Sept. 30 date at Adrian College.
