Women's Basketball improves to 3-0 with victory over Marietta

ANGOLA, Ind. – Emily Bernas made all five of her shots in the first quarter and Elena Welker scored 13 in the fourth quarter to boost Albion College to a 75-67 victory over Marietta College in a non-league women's basketball game.

Albion shot 73 percent (11-of-15) from the field in the first quarter as it jumped out to a 27-13 lead. Bernas scored 11 of her season-high 18 in the quarter.

Albion shot 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field in the fourth quarter. Welker started Albion's 8-0 run with a 3-point basket and a layup and Evelyn Wischmeyer added a 3-point basket as the Britons surged to a 65-54 lead with 7 ½ minutes to play.

Welker, a first-year guard from Dearborn Heights, Mich., finished with a career-high 23 points. She stuffed the box score with four rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Rain Hinton was the other Briton to score in double figures, finishing with 13.

Albion, winners of its first three games of the season, returns home for a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday game against local rival Spring Arbor University.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
