Albion proves resilient on the road

Box Score

HOLLAND, Mich. – Albion College and Hope College didn't wear throwback uniforms at the DeVos Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon even though the play on the court resembled what it looked like when the teams battled for supremacy in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 2004 and 2005.

Kenedy Schoonveld received a sideline inbound pass at the low block with 1.1 seconds remaining and scored the layup as time expired to lift the Flying Dutch to a 45-43 victory over the Britons in a defensive battle.

Albion trailed by as many as 19 three minutes into the third quarter, but the Britons proved resilient to push fourth-ranked Hope to the brink.

  • Rain Hinton scored seven points over the last 2 ½ minutes of the third quarter to pull Albion within seven, 38-31.
  • Albion didn't score for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and fell behind by 11, but Emily Bernas knocked down 3-point baskets on consecutive possessions to trim the margin to 42-39 with four minutes to play.
  • Elena Welker made three throws, including a pair with 34.1 seconds left, to forge a tie at 43.

"I'm proud of how we fought back and gave ourselves a chance to win here," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "We had a bad first half. We had good looks (at the basket), we couldn't get anything to fall."

Albion shot 19 percent from the field (6-of-32) in the first half, but improved to 48 percent (10-of-21) in the second half.

Hinton led the Britons with 16 points, shooting 7-of-13 from the field. Bernas chipped in with 11 points and Evelyn Wischmeyer pulled down nine rebounds.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu
