ALBION -- On Saturday morning, the Albion College men's and women's tennis teams closed out the fall portion of their seasons against Anderson University. The men fell 7-2 while the women dropped their match, 8-1.
On the men's side, Brett Gurzell played a part in both of the Briton victories. At first doubles, Gurzell and reigning MIAA Athlete of the Week, Drake Malcolm, defeated their opponents in a tough 8-6 match.
Gurzell's day didn't get easier once singles play started. He picked up a win at first singles, 5-7, 6-0, 10-4 to give the Britons their only singles win of the afternoon.Â
Malcolm was narrowly defeated at third singles, dropping his set, 7-5, 7-5.Â
The women's team gained their win at sixth singles when Morgan DeRose earned a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 victory.Â
At third doubles, Ellie Debo and Savannah McDonald dropped a close match, 8-5. Additionally at fourth singles, freshman Josie Dunn fell by a tough 6-4, 6-3 margin.Â
On Friday afternoon, Gurzell, Malcolm and Danny McGarry all competed at the ITA Regional, hosted by Kalamazoo College. Malcolm and Gurzell won their first doubles match of the day, 8-6, before falling to a tough duo from Kalamazoo.Â
Gurzell and McGarry went 0-2 in singles play, facing off against tough competition from the SLIAC, NCAC and OAC.
Both teams will be off until the spring season commences in February.
