BEAVER FALLS, Penn. -- A back and forth battle was eventually won by the Albion College men's basketball team, picking up its first win in a 57-48 victory over Grove City College. Senior guard
MJ Barnes led all scorers with 19 points.
Only two other Brits finished the night in double figures,
Justin McAbee (12 points) and
Cortez Garland (11 points).
Neither team could find momentum in the first half, as the two teams consistently traded buckets and stops. The largest lead came with 2:22 before the break, courtesy of a Grove City jumper.
A basket by Barnes cut into the lead, as the Britons trailed at the half, 26-23.
Barnes ignited a run out of the half, scoring seven in a row, as the Britons capitalized on their first possession. Barnes knocked down a triple to tie the game at 26, and gave Albion the lead two possessions later.
Holding a 34-26 lead, McAbee scored four straight points, extending the run and increasing Albion's lead to eight points with 15 minutes to play.
Despite Grove City cutting into the Albion lead, the Brits would not let the Wolverines get any closer than within four points.
Three late points by
Devin Holmes -- his only points of the night -- couldn't come at a more crucial time. The senior completed an and-one with 4:22 remaining, turning a six point lead into a nine point lead.
Throughout the final few minutes, Albion continued to force turnovers to push the lead to double digits and give the Brits their first win of the season.
Three Albion players brought down six rebounds -- Barnes,
Ken Thomas and
Khy Winston.
The Britons saw four players tally three steals -- McAbee, Garland, Thomas and
Lamar Lee.
Albion dominated inside, outsourcing the Wolverines in the paint, 38-24.
The game features even lead changes and one tie.
On Saturday, the Britons will wrap up their Pennsylvania trip when they play Geneva College. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
