ALBION -- Hosting the first wrestling event on campus in over 40 years, the Albion College men's and women's wrestling teams put on an incredible show. The teams were led by first place finishes from Sam Parcell,
Ty Cowen and
CJ Krum.
In their first-ever event on campus, the women's team excelled as all three Brits placed in their weight classes.
Parcell cruised to a 2-0 afternoon, recording a pair of tech fall victories. She took first in the 123 class.
Summer Mauk took second, going 3-2 on the day. She picked up a tech fall and a pair of pins (:47, 2:03) en route to the runner-up finish.
Placing third was
Jayla Oberst. Highlighting the freshman's day was a 10-0 victory.
On the men's side, another 1-2 performance by the heavyweights led Albion.
Krum defeated nationally ranked
Owen Miller, 5-4, in a tiebreaker in the championship bout. For the second time in as many competitions, the pair went 1-2 in the 285 bracket. Miller earned his spot in the championship match by pinning all four opponents prior to Krum.
Cowen took home first at 141, backed by a perfect 4-0 day. All four of his matches were hard-fought battles, picking up 5-3. 8-5, 8-6 and 5-2 wins.
At 133,
Kyle Schaaf finished second in his first Albion appearance. He went 3-1 on the day, including a pin in 2:10 in his opening bout.
Coming in at second place at 184 was
Owen McDaniel. The freshman had another solid performance, going 3-1 with a pin along the way.
Max Honiss was fourth at 149. In the consolation bracket, his day was highlighted by a 13-3 major decision victory.
Zachary Johnson recorded two pins on the day at 157, pinning his opponents in 4:06 and :40.
Chris Mills took fourth at 165, earning a pin and a tech fall win on the day.
Freshman
Boden Brown wrestled his way to a fifth place finish at 197. In the fifth place match, Brown took a 4-2 decision.
At 184, freshman
JD Stokes took sixth.
Daniel Mills went 0-2 at 174 and
James Mida was 0-2 at 184.
The men's team placed third out of 12 teams, scoring 133.5 points on the day.
On Dec. 4, the men's team will compete at the MSOE Invitational in Wisconsin. The women's squad will be idle until Dec. 18, when they travel to California for the West Coast Tournament of Champions.
