Welker, Little help WBB stifle Scots

ALMA, Mich. -- Backed by a dominant performance from Dareonna Little, the Albion College women's basketball team defeated Alma College, 72-56, on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore registered a career and game-high 21 points while hauling in nine rebounds. Little went a perfect 9 for 9 from the floor in the win.

Junior Elena Welker was stellar, scoring 18 points as Lolo Reed added 12 points and seven boards for the Britons.

Winners of five straight, Albion improves to 8-1 overall, 3-0 in the MIAA. Alma moves to 6-4, 1-1.

After one quarter, the Brits led 21-8. With the score tied at six, Albion rattled off an  8-0 run to create distance from the Scots and build a double digit lead. Daniah Beavers ignited the action by scoring four straight points.

A three from Welker and a bucket by Little pushed the Brits ahead by 16 to start the second quarter. Albion would sustain the lead, as Angelina Mendieta knocked down a three in the final minute of the half. Alma answer with a 3-pointer at the other end, but the Brits led 37-24 at halftime.

Alma would cut the Albion lead to eight points late in the third, but the Britons had an immediate answer. Little converted an and-one and scored another basket to give the visitors a 13 point lead heading into the final period.

The story would remain all Albion, as the Scots could not find an answer to stop Little down the stretch.

Cierra Cole dished out five assists while Beavers added seven rebounds.

The Britons scored 21 points off turnovers in the win. With the help of Little, Albion dominated the inside game, outscoring the hosts 44-22.

Now averaging 12.1 PPG, Little sits fifth overall in the MIAA. She also is fourth in field goal percentage (61.1 percent).

Mendieta continues to lead the league in 3-point percentage, connecting on nearly 58 percent of her shots from deep.

With a week off for finals, Albion will resume play on Dec. 18 at Adrian for a 3 p.m. game time.
