Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mendieta's career-high helps WBB cruise past Comets

ALBION -- A career-high 18 points off the bench by Angelina Mendieta helped the Albion College women's basketball team remain perfect in conference play, defeating Olivet College 78-44 on Saturday afternoon. The junior was 4 of 6 from beyond the arc en route to the 18 points.

Albion, winners of three straight, improve to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in the MIAA. The Comets slip to 1-7, 0-2.

Becca Ross tied a career-high with 15 points for the Britons. Riley Davis turned in another solid performance, scoring 10 points and bringing down six boards. Elena Welker was superb at dishing out the offense, recording seven assists in the win.

Sharp-shooting from deep helped Olivet in a tight first quarter, as the Britons held just a three point advantage after one.

A slow start to the second quarter turned Albion's way in the final minutes of the half. Davis found Mendieta who buried a three, putting the Brits up 29-20. After an Olivet turnover, a putback by Lolo Reed gave Albion its first double-digit lead of the day with 2:18 before the half.

Olivet knocked down a late triple, but the hosts led 38-23 at halftime.

The Britons began to pull away in the third quarter, putting a full court press on the Comets. Senior Cierra Cole was a pest defensively, racking up six steals and forcing Comet players to make poor passes.

With 2:53 remaining in the third, Mendieta found Ross for three, giving Albion a 50-31 lead. Following a stop at the other end, Ross then found Mendieta in transition for a bucket, extending the advantage to 21.

As time expired in the third, Reed made a beautiful inbounds pass to Welker for a layup, as Albion led 56-32 heading into the final period.

Holding all of the momentum, the Britons built a sizable lead over the Comets throughout the fourth.

Backed by Mendieta, the Britons outscored the Olivet bench, 38-8. Albion also capitalized on mistakes, turning 37 Olivet turnovers into 38 points at the other end.

Both Davis and Daniah Beavers led the Brits with six rebounds apiece.

Cole now leads the MIAA in steals (26) and steals per game (3.7). After her seven assists on Saturday, Welker is third in assists per game (3.9).

Albion travels to Spring Arbor on Dec. 8 for a 7 p.m. tip off.
