ALBION -- The Albion College men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2021 season with a 7-2 win over Alma College on Saturday afternoon.

The Britons started their day by sweeping all three doubles matches. At first doubles, freshman Michael Polizzi and junior Danny McGarry won by an 8-5 margin. With a dominating 8-1 win, Brett Gurzell and Drake Malcolm earned a win for the Britons at second doubles. Matthew Czarnecki and Cecil Burkhart capped off the doubles matches by picking up an 8-4 victory.

Gurzell narrowly missed a win at first doubles for the Britons, falling 2-6, 7-5, 4-6. Similarly, McGarry dropped a tough match at second doubles, 5-7, 6-2, 6-10.

Albion answered by winning the final four singles matches. Polizzi won by scores of 6-3, 6-3 at third singles and Malcolm, another freshman, defeated his opponent at fourth singles, 6-0, 7-5.

Patrick Smoker (6-5, 7-5) and Czarnecki (6-1, 6-0) rounded out the singles matches for the Britons.

On Friday, Albion will host Olivet College. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
