Box Score ALBION -- Backed by a 17-kill night from Kate Winter, the Albion College volleyball team cruised to a three set win over Kalamazoo College in their home opener. In their first match in 497 days, the Britons attacked at a .343 clip.
Prior to the match, Albion honored its three seniors -- Winter, Kameron Haley and Grace VanDorn -- all of whom played key roles in the win.
In a shaky first set, Albion took some time to find its rhythm. Five straight Briton points pushed Albion to a 17-12 lead in the opening set, thanks to kills by Winter, Hannnah Miller, VanDorn and Shelby Palmer. The Brits would eventually take the first set, 25-18 off a kill by freshman Olivia Alexander.
The hosts held total control in the second set, rolling off six straight points to build a commanding lead and never look back. Albion scored the final four points of the set, winning by a handily 25-10 margin.
In the final set, Albion held a sizeable lead, but Kalamazoo crawled back to cut the deficit to one point. With the Brits up 23-22, a Kaylynne Nicholson kill gave the ball back to Albion. Haley capped off senior night with an ace, sending the Brits home with a sweep.
VanDorn led the offense with 21 assists while freshman setter Mariah Brenz dished out 13. Junior Chloe Webber added nine kills. Jenna Khoury paced the back row with 12 digs.
Albion will be back in action on Wednesday when the team hosts Adrian College. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m.
