Offense leads volleyball to sweep at Olivet

Box Score

OLIVET, Mich. -- A strong offensive showing helped the Albion College volleyball team sweep the Olivet College Comets, 3-0, on Wednesday evening. Albion attacked at a .330 percentage, committing just 11 errors in the whole match.

The Britons improve to 3-0 overall on the young season.

With 14 kills, junior Chloe Webber led the attack, swinging at a .667 clip. Kate Winter was the other Brit with double-digit kills, finishing with 12.

Freshman Mariah Brenz served as the primary setter, dishing out 24 assists -- a career-high. Grace VanDorn contributed 12.

Defensively, Kameron Haley (nine) and Jenna Khoury (eight) led the Britons.

In the first set, Albion wasted no time jumping out to a commanding lead. With the Britons holding a 12-8 lead, the visitors scored seven straight points to build the advantage to 19-8. A kill by Winter got the ball back to Albion. With Ava Smith back to serve, Olivet committed two attack errors and had a receiving error on an ace from Smith. During that run, Albion got kills from Kaylynne Nicholson, Brenz and Webber.

Jesse Hepner's kill gave Albion an impressive 25-11 win in the first set.

The Comets had an answer in the second set, and led 23-17. With the ball in Albion's hands, an ace from Haley was followed by a kill from Webber, forcing Olivet to call timeout. Albion continued shifting the momentum in their favor, as Webber registered the next two points for the Britons.

Olivet, up 24-21, was one point from taking the set and evening the match. Albion had an entirely different idea, scoring five straight to fully swing the momentum. Freshman Olivia Alexander's kill and two Comet errors knotted the set at 24. Another Olivet error pushed Albion up by one, and Brenz gave the visitors the 26-24 comeback win, going up 2-0.

Albion kept the pace in the third set, turning a 12-9 deficit into a 15-12 lead. In that span, Winter recorded four of her 12 kills.

Similar to the way set one ended, a Hepner kill secured the victory for the Britons, 25-19.

As of the conclusion of this game, Webber leads the MIAA in hitting percentage (.470) and Khoury leads in digs per set (4.30).

On Friday, Albion will travel to No. 14 Calvin University. The match is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
