ALBION, Mich. -- Back on the courts, the Albion College men's tennis team was narrowly defeated, 5-4, by Trine University on Wednesday afternoon. The Britons dropped two heartbreaking tiebreakers during the singles matches.
At first doubles, Patrick Smoker and Daniel McGarry won 8-7(5) in a tough match. Brett Gurzell and Drake Malcolm followed it up at second doubles with an 8-7(3) victory.
At first singles, Gurzell dropped his match 6-1, 7-6, 6-0. Trine went on to take the next two singles matches before Malcolm won at fourth singles by scores of 7-6(8-6), 6-2. Smoker fell at fifth doubles just barely (7-6, 5-7, 6-4) before Matthew Czarnecki won at sixth singles 6-3, 6-4.
Albion will travel to Calvin on Saturday for the second half of a men's and women's doubleheader. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
