Box Score ALBION -- In their 2021 spring finale, the Albion College volleyball team claimed third place in the MIAA Tournament on Saturday morning, sweeping Alma College, 3-0. With the win, Albion concludes the season with a 6-3 overall record.
Freshman Olivia Alexander led the offense with 12 kills. Chloe Webber added 11, the only two Albion players with double-digit kills on the day. Kate Winter and Kaylynne Nicholson each finished with seven kills.
Both Kameron Haley and Ava Smith recorded 11 digs in the win. Mariah Brenz had a team-high 19 assists while Grace VanDorn added 12.
In the first set, the teams were locked in an 18-18 tie. The Britons closed out the set on a 7-0 run to take the opener, 25-18. Three Webber kills and a pair of Nicholson kills highlighted the run for Albion.
With the Britons holding a 23-21 lead, Nicholson tallied a kill to put the hosts within one of clinching the set. An Alma attack error sealed the win for the Brits, giving Albion a commanding two games to none lead.
Albion held all of the momentum during the final set, winning by a handily 25-15 margin. Numerous Alma attack errors aided the Brits to the win, as the Scots attacked at a -.024 clip in the set.
Prior to the match, the All-MIAA awards were announced. Webber received first team honors while VanDorn and Winter were named to the second team. Winter was also selected as the Senior Sportswoman of the Year.
The win concludes the careers of Winter and VanDorn -- two vital pieces to this Albion team over the last four years. Winter leaves with the seventh most kills in Albion history (827) and racked up 164 total blocks. VanDorn lands herself second on the all-time assists list (2,767) and totaled 985 digs.
