Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Barnes, Garland put on a show in win over Adrian

ALBION – 50 combined points by Cortez Garland and MJ Barnes helped the Albion College men's basketball team erase an early deficit and defeat Adrian College, 90-74. Senior Devin Holmes added a magnificent game on the glass, bringing down 17 rebounds – eight on the offensive side.

Garland (26) and Barnes (24) led Albion, while Chanse Crittendon scored 11 points. Junior Ken Thomas totalied 11 rebounds. Garland was an impressive 15 of 18 from the free throw line, in addition to dishing out five assists.

The Britons move over .500, improving to 9-8 overall, 5-1 in the MIAA.

Adrian came out with plenty of momentum, hitting big shots and taking an early lead.; Midway through the first half, the Bulldogs led, 20-12. Albion responded with an 8-0 run, and six straight points by Khy Winston provided the Brits with the needed spark. After Garland picked off a pass, the senior knotted the game at 20 with a fast break layup.

The Bulldogs regained the lead temporarily, but Barnes scored the final five points of the half, giving Albion a 34-32 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Brits began to slowly build their lead, finally inflating it to 10 with a Crittendon bucket. A few moments later, the sophomore buried a big triple off a kick out pass by Thomas, giving the hosts a 55-43 lead.

Four perfect free throws by Garland and Barnes kept the momentum in Albion's favor, before Barnes knocked down another trey for a 19 point lead with 11:16 remaining.

With 3:42 to play, Adrian whittled the Albion lead to eight points, giving some life back to the Bulldogs. Holmes and Thomas had answers, pushing the Briton lead back to 11 and securing the conference victory.

Having to use the free throw line often, the Britons struggled from the floor, shooting just 37.8 percent.

The second half saw four technical fouls awarded to Adrian.  Albion saw 46 trips to the free throw line, but could only capitalize on 30 attempts

Albion will look to win its fifth straight game on Wednesday at Alma College. Tip off against the Scots is at 7:30 p.m.
