Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's hoops back on winning track

ALBION – A double-double by Lolo Reed lifted the Albion College women's basketball team to a 71-54 win over Adrian College on Saturday. The win snaps a two-game losing skid, moving the Britons to 14-4 overall, 7-2 in the MIAA.

Reed put on another spectacular performance, scoring 19 points, bringing down 10 rebounds and dishing out five assists – all game-highs. Sophomore Dareonna Little contributed 10 points in the win.

Off to an 11-4 lead, the Britons controlled the tempo from the opening tip. Seven points by Reed and four by Becca Ross put Albion on top early. Ross finished the game with nine points, as a big and-one by Reed capped the run.

Boosted by the 3-point game, the Bulldogs worked to cut the Albion lead to two points. Reed immediately answered with a jumper, giving the Britons a 21-17 lead after one.

Albion went on a 9-0 lead to start the second quarter. Reed swiped a pass from Adrian and found Angelina Mendieta ahead for a bucket. On the next Albion possession, Little followed her own miss for a put back, extending the lead to eight. After a stop, Little made a nice kick out pass to Romee Natschke, who drained a three from the wing for a double-digit advantage. Another and-one – this one by Little, put the Britons up 31-17 and forced Adrian to call timeout.

The Brits went into halftime up 39-29.

In the third, the Britons built their lead to as many as 18 points. Sparked by solid performances off the bench by Daniah Beavers and Audrey DeWaters, the Britons got plenty of contributions. Beavers and DeWaters combined for 16 rebounds – eight on the offensive glass.

Baskets by Natschke, Reed and DeWaters led to the hosts scoring the final seven points of the quarter, extending the lead to 23 after three.

With the momentum in complete favor of Albion, the Britons picked up a much-needed win on their home court.

The seven points and seven rebounds are both career-highs for Natschke. DeWaters also recorded a new career-best with eight rebounds.

Despite struggling from three (15.4 percent) and the free throw line (47.8 percent), Albion was able to use their inside game to their advantage, scoring 54 points in the paint.

Albion also capitalized on turnovers, scoring 22 points off 17 Adrian miscues. The Bulldogs could not cash in, mustering just nine points off turnovers.

The Britons travel to Olivet on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. MIAA matchup. In December, the Britons handily defeated the Comets, 78-44, with Mendieta scoring 18 points.
