Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 22 VB splits, records most wins in a season

ELMHURST, Ill. – The No. 22 Albion College volleyball team has officially won the most games in school history. With a split on Friday night, the Britons moved to 21-4 overall, defeating Elmhurst College before dropping a tight contest to No. 13 Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Albion registered 12 total blocks in the first match, led by seven assisted blocks by fifth year senior, Chloe Webber.

GAME ONE: Albion 3 Elmhurst 2

It was a marathon contest to open the weekend for the Britons. After taking the first two sets, the Blue Jays (6-13) rallied back to take the next two and force a fifth set.

Trailing 18-14 in the first set, Albion used a seven point swing to turn the score into a three point advantage. A block by Ja'Nyece Larry and Jesse Hepner gave the ball back to the Britons, where libero Courtney Companion led the way from the service line. A pair of Companion aces along with two Elmhurst attack errors vaulted Albion ahead by one. The Britons got another block – this one from Larry and Webber, before another Elmhurst error ended the run.

The Blue Jays would persist and cut the Briton advantage to 24-23, but once again, Albion's block came up strong. Mariah Brenz and Webber knocked down an Elmhurst attempt to give the Brits a 25-23 win in the opener.

Albion held the lead for a majority of the second set. Clinging to a one point lead, Larry came up big for the Britons with a kill, putting Albion one point away from the win. Webber and Brenz secured the final point for Albion with another block, as Albion went up two sets to none.

A scrappy Blue Jays squad relied on a 6-0 run late in the third to extend their lead to 21-15. The tournament hosts eventually won the set, 25-16. In the fourth, Elmhurst continued to hold all of the momentum, winning by another 25-16 margin and forcing a winner take all scenario.

Kills from Webber and Olivia Alexander helped the Britons take a 5-2 lead in the fifth. With a 7-6 lead, Alexander was back to serve. The junior was a key part in a 4-0 run, firing off two aces to give Albion an 11-6 lead. The Britons scored the final three points of the contest, as an impressive solo block by Kaylynne Nicholson on the outside ended the game with a 15-9 victory.

Webber was the only Briton to finish in double-digit kills (14). Hepner (9) and Alexander (8) were both vital pieces of the Albion offense. Brenz had 35 assists and Companion tallied 18 digs in the win.

GAME TWO: UW-Oshkosh 3 Albion 1

Early on, the hangover from the game one win seemed to linger, as the Titans rolled out to a 23-15 lead. Albion eventually settled in and cut the score to 23-18. After a Titan point, the Brits scored three more, but a kill from UWO gave them a 25-21 win in the first set.

The two teams traded points throughout the second set. The difference came late, when Albion held an 18-15 lead. UWO rattled off six straight points to take a three point lead, one they would not surrender for the remainder of the set. A 25-20 win was enough for UWO to hold a 2-0 advantage in the match.

Filled with excitement, back and forth rallies and no true momentum, the third set was a wild one where the Britons fought to stay alive. A 6-1 run by the Brits gave them a 23-20 lead late in the set. Despite the Titans rallying, a block from Webber and Brenz sealed a 25-23 win.

UWO held a two point lead late in the fourth before a 4-0 run put them a point away from taking the match, which the Titans ultimately would do.

Alexander led the Britons with 10 kills, recording a double-double with 11 digs as well. Larry, a sophomore, recorded a career-high with nine kills. Companion paced the defense with 17 digs as Brenz ended with 26 assists.

The Britons struggled offensively, attacking at just a .035 clip.

It will be a quick turnaround for Albion, as they play UW-River Falls tomorrow at 12 p.m. CST.
