Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Defense holds tough, MLAX improves to 2-0

ALBION – On a windy afternoon, the Albion College men's lacrosse team erased an early deficit to defeat Otterbein University, 13-5. The Britons were led by Sam Puzevic and Jace Conley – each tallying five points.

As a team, the Britons recorded 19 caused turnovers, as Joey Tatar caused eight. Tatar led the NCAA a season ago in caused turnovers with 55.

Senior captain Gerald Haadsma was incredible from the faceoff X, going 14 of 19 while picking up 11 ground balls.

Otterbein took an early 2-0 lead before Albion got on the board with five minutes to play in the first. Sophomore Ethan Rottell scored an unassisted goal to cut the Otterbein lead in half. Less than a minute later, Rottell found Haadsma for the equalizer.

With 2:53 remaining in the first, the Britons capitalized on a man-up opportunity. Brock Yabs found Puzevic for the junior's first goal of the day, as Albion led 3-2 after the first quarter.

Back to back goals by Conley opened the second and gave Albion a 5-2 lead with 12:08 to play before halftime. A Cardinal goal was quickly answered by Conley, as the senior netted all four Albion goals in the period. With six seconds to play before the half, a Tatar CT led to an attack at the other end, as Puzevic connected with Conley for a 7-3 lead at the break.

Chad Burton found Puzevic to start the third quarter scoring and an 8-3 lead. A minute later, Rottell found Gage Thrall for his first goal of the season, pushing the lead to six goals. Sophomore Timmy Salinas added the next goal for Albion, seeing the hosts holding a 10-3 edge.

Despite a goal from the Cardinals, Haadsma found Puzevic in the final minute off the faceoff, giving the Brits an 11-4 lead heading into the final period.

Puzevic and Conley each netted the final two goals for the Britons.

Albion outshot the Cardinals, 53-26 in the win. Sophomore goalie Bradley Luketic (2-0) made seven saves in three periods of work.

Albion was 12 for 13 on the clear, as the Cardinals struggled, capitalizing on only 50 percent of clear attempts.

On Saturday, the Brits will host Oberlin College for a 3 p.m. game. It will come on the back half of a men's-women's doubleheader and will also serve as the team's Vs. Cancer game.
