Game Recap: Baseball |

Late rallies come up short at Franklin

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Late rallies came up short for the Albion College baseball team, where they were swept by Franklin College. In game one, the Brits put runs across late, but would not be enough in an 11-6 loss. In game two, Albion gave up six unearned runs in an 11-5 loss.

KEY STATS

Sean Haddlesey: 4 for 8, 2 RBI
Zac Gray: 3 for 9, 3 RBI
Justin Charron: 3 for 8, 2 RBI

GAME ONE

Franklin pushed across runs early, breaking to an early 5-0 lead after four. Sophomore Braeden Emery led off the fifth with a solo shot to right, providing the Brits with their first run of the day. The Grizzlies answered in the home half, getting that run right back.

Freshman Austyn Stephens slugged his first collegiate home run in the seventh, bringing the score to 6-2. Once more, the Grizzlies tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning. In the eighth, Gray also homered for Albion's third run of the afternoon.

The Grizzlies put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth, erupting for four runs off just one hit and one Albion error.

With two on and one out in the ninth, Haddlesey drove a double down the left field line, plating a run. Gray followed with a single up the middle, driving in Haddlesey and Patrick Merolla. The runs would be all the Brits would get as the Grizzlies induced a flyout and a strikeout to end the threat.

Albion outhit the Grizzlies 12-8 in the game, but could not produce the timely hits.

Junior Pete Loch was terrific in relief. Loch tossed seven innings, striking out seven while allowing four runs and walking two.

GAME TWO

Committing four errors in the contest, Albion's defense struggled in the nightcap.

A Franklin run in the bottom of the fourth was answered by a 4-spot in the top of the fifth. Chris Marshall hit an opposite field single and moved to second when Gray was hit by a pitch. After Merolla bunted the runners over, Haddlesey was walked to load the bases. Senior Justin Charron delivered a base knock up the middle, driving in Gray and Marshall to give the Brits the lead.

Three batters later, Matt McGann's double brought in Haddlesey and Charron for a 4-1 Albion lead. Franklin got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Britons still held a lead after five.

In the sixth, Gray smacked a one-out double to right and moved to third on a wild pitch. He came around to score on a Haddlesey single for a 5-3 Albion lead. The lead was short-lived as the Grizzlies took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. Franklin scored three runs on three hits and one error for a 6-5 advantage.

The game was called after eight due to darkness.
