Men's tennis erases deficit, battles to win over LVC

Archived // Abby Sheklow
HILTON HEAD, SC – An unbelievable comeback kickstarted the week on a high note for the Albion College men's tennis team, defeating a very good Lebanon Valley team, 5-4. It marked the first time all season the Brits went into singles being down after doubles – but still came away victorious.

At first doubles, Brett Gurzell and Drake Malcolm started Albion off on the right track, earning an 8-3 win. The second doubles team of Danny McGarry and Patrick Smoker lost a tight match in a tiebreaker, 9-7.

Gurzell quickly evened the score and put Albion in a good position, winning his match at first singles, 6-3, 6-2. At second singles, McGarry had a thriller of a match, winning in a tiebreaker. The senior vaulted the Brits back on top with a 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 win. McGarry put together the most significant match of his collegiate career to give Albion momentum heading into the rest of singles play.

Malcolm put together an incredible comeback at third singles. After trailing 5-1 in the first set, the sophomore battled, falling 6-4. In the second set, Malcolm faced the same 5-1 deficit, but came back to win, 7-6 (7-4) and force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Malcolm won 10-8, putting Albion one win from taking the match.

With the match down to fourth singles, Polizzi prevailed for the Brits, winning 6-4, 6-2. The sophomore's victory clinched the win, starting the spring trip off right.

Albion will be back on the courts on Monday for an 8:30 a.m. match against Cairn University.
