Tennis sweeps Olivet for first MIAA wins

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Back on track, the Albion College men's and women's tennis teams each picked up a 9-0 win over Olivet College. Each team earns their first conference victory of the season.

On the men's side, the first doubles squad of Brett Gurzell and Drake Malcolm stayed brilliant with an 8-5 victory. The Britons dominated doubles play, receiving an 8-2 win from Danny McGarry and Patrick Smoker and an 8-0 shutout by Cecil Burkhart and Michael Polizzi.

All six singles matches went in favor of the Brits. Gruzell, Malcolm, McGarry, Polizzi, Smoker and Burkhart were the six for the Briton lineup.

On the women's side, Breh Ruger and Katie Valade gritted out an 8-7 (7-2) win at first doubles. Saige Jost and Josie Dunn cruised to an 8-0 win in second doubles before Ellie Debo and Savannah McDonald closed out doubles action with an 8-2 win.

Jost claimed a win at first doubles, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5). Valade, Dunn, Reed and McDonald all cruised to wins in their singles matches. At third singles, Ruger put together a tough comeback victory, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4).

Albion will be back on the courts next Saturday for a men's-women's doubleheader at Trine.
