Game Recap: Baseball |

Marshall strikes for 8 RBI in sweep

BLUFFTON, Ohio – Erase a 7-0 deficit? Check. Have a freshman drive in eight? Check. Sweep? Check.

Chris Marshall was unstoppable at the plate, guiding the Albion College baseball team to a pair of seven-inning wins over Bluffton University. The freshman was 5 for 6 with two home runs and eight RBI on the day, as Albion won by scores of 13-8 and 11-9.

GAME ONE: Albion 13 Bluffton 8

Things looked bleak early on, as Bluffton struck for five in the first and two in the second. Trailing 7-0 after two, Albion went on to score in four of the next five innings to rally back and win game one.

Sean Haddlesey got the Brits on the board in the third with an RBI single to plate Braeden Emery

Thanks to a pair of homers, Albion scored four in the fourth. Senior Justin Charron led off the inning with a solo shot to cut the deficit to 7-2. Both Matt McGann and Mark Lauro followed it up with back to back singles. After an out was recorded, Marshall belted a 3-run home run to bring the visitors within two.

Albion took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring three runs on just one hit. Zac Gray and McGann were hit by pitches and Charron walked. With the bases loaded, Ryker Mazey drew a two-out walk, forcing home a run.

One batter later, Marshall provided Albion with the lead on a single to drive in McGann and Charron for an 8-7 advantage.

RBI singles in the sixth from Gray, Mazey and Marshall helped the Britons break the game open to hold a significant lead.

Freshman Brady Gawne was stellar in relief, throwing five innings, allowing just one run, four hits and struck out five.

GAME TWO: Albion 11 Bluffton 9

Led by Marshall and Lauro, Albion took game two from the Beavers.

Facing a 3-0 deficit, the Britons tied the game in the top of the second. Lauro cranked his second home run in as many days for the first Albion run of the game. After Mazey singled, Marshall followed it up with another long ball – his third in three games – knotting the game at three.

Albion took a 5-3 lead in the top half of the fourth. Marshall drew a one-out walk and later scored on a Beaver error. With Austyn Stephens on third, Carson Dunn lifted a sac fly to center, giving Albion a two run cushion.

After the Beavers tied the game at five, the Brits regained the lead in the sixth. Marshall singled and moved to second on a sac bunt and came around to score on a base hit from Emery. One batter later, freshman Sawyer Shotwell drove in Emery on a double, pushing Albion ahead 7-5.

The Brits tacked on four in the seventh – much needed – as Bluffton scored four in the bottom of the inning. McGann doubled and scored on a RBI base knock by Lauro. With the bases loaded, Emery cleared the bags with a double for an 11-5 lead.

Bluffton put up four in the bottom of the seventh, but Albion would hang on for the win.

Albion will host the Beavers for a single game on Wednesday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
