Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's hoops battles back to win at Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Holding Rose-Hulman to just six points over the final 11 minutes, the Albion College men's basketball team erased the deficit to earn a 65-64 win against the Fightin' Engineers. With the win, the Brits improve to 3-3 this season.

With 17 points, AJ Barden led all players on an 8 of 12 shooting performance. Sophomore Beck Willems scored the go-ahead free throw with 8.7 seconds on the clock to push Albion ahead for good. Willems came off the bench to score 11 points.

Highlighted by a 3 of 5 night from beyond the arc, Zak Krueger tacked on 11 points for the Brits.

It was an incredibly back and forth first half, as no team led by more than five points in the first period. The Fightin' Engineers went on to score the final four points of the first half to hold a slim 39-38 advantage following 20 minutes of action.

RHIT went on a run early in the new half, building a lead to as large as 10 points. After the 11:16 mark, the hosts would be held to just six points, while a composed Albion squad slowly made its comeback.

A steal led to an and one from Barden to cut the RHIT lead to seven points. Barden would score the next four Albion points as the Britons trimmed the deficit to three. As the hosts regained a seven point advantage, Willems immediately had an answer.

Willems cut the deficit back down to three after draining a 3-pointer off a pass from Nathan Steinman. With 3:06 on the clock, freshman Kurtis Rhodes buried both free throws to knot the game at 62.

Barden answered another Rose-Hulman bucket with one of his own to once again tie the game up with 55 seconds to play. A missed three from the hosts resulted in a big defensive rebound by Willems, who was later fouled at the other end. The sophomore made the first free throw to vault Albion ahead, but missed the second. The Briton defense held incredibly tough, as RHIT was unable to even get a shot off in the final eight seconds.

Barden hauled in seven rebounds to go along with his 17 points. Steinman led Albion with four assists, while contributing six points and five rebounds. Kam Mayes tacked on nine points as well.

The Britons will be idle until Dec. 9 when they travel to Oberlin College for a 3 p.m. contest.
