Western equestrian competes in final show of 2023

ALBION – It was another stellar weekend for the Albion College western equestrian team in a doubleheader on Saturday.

In the morning show, the Britons were awarded Reserve High Point Team status.

Sophomore Ella Farwell led the way by winning her section of Level I Horsemanship. Additionally, Anastasia Kiser also won a section of Level I Horsemanship.

Albion started off the show with two riders placing in Level II Horsemanship – Anna Divis (second) and Jenna Smith (fifth). Kailey Kowalchuk and Dylan Allison followed by taking second and third in Beginner Horsemanship.

In Open Horsemanship, Carli Kerns was one of two riders to place, claiming third. In sixth was junior Miley Phillips. Bryn Osborne took third in Rookie B Horsemanship as Abigail Nevins was fifth. Katelyn Proshek won the Rookie A Horsemanship event for the Brits.

Sophomore Madison Weedon won Level II Ranch Riding, as Phillips tacked on another placing – this time in fifth. Rounding out the show, Carli Kerns won Opening Reining while senior Aria Morgan was just behind in third.

Albion went on to win High Point Team honors in the afternoon show, seeing Ainslie Schlagel qualify for Western Regionals in Level I Horsemanship and Carli Kerns qualify in Open Reining.

Starting things off for the Brits was another first place finish in Open Reining by Kerns. Morgan was the runner-up in the event.

Amelia Otten's win was one of two placers for Albion in Level II Ranch Riding. In fourth place was Madison Brilley.

Albion was well-represented in both sections of Level I Horsemanship, as Kiser won the first section and Schlagel taking fourth. In the other section, Farwell finished second.

Proshek went on to place second in the afternoon showing of Rookie A Horsemanship. In Rookie B Horsemanship, Osborne was third and freshman Evelyn Michelin placed fourth.

Morgan and Phillips were once again honored in Open Horsemanship, taking second and sixth, respectively.

The Britons saw four riders recognized in Level II Horsemanship, led by Weedon's win. Divis was second, Brilley was third and Smith rounded out the group by taking fifth.

Ending the show, Kowalchuk claimed first place in Beginner Horsemanship, as Allison turned in a fourth place finish.

The Western Brits will be idle until Jan. 28 at Michigan State.
