Men's tennis comes up short in spring opener

ALBION – In their 2023 spring debut, the Albion College men's tennis team dropped a tight 6-3 decision to St. Francis (Ind.). A young Albion lineup saw some good things as it prepares for a tough conference schedule later in the season.

At first doubles, Brett Gurzell and Brandon Blake narrowly fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4). The Britons got a win at second doubles, thanks to an 8-6 win by Drake Malcolm and Brendan Morrison. The freshmen duo of Josh Doyloe and Jacob Doyle went on to earn an 8-5 victory in third doubles.

Malcolm, playing at second singles, fell in a tightly contested match, 6-4, 7-6(5). Morrison came up just short at third singles, as the freshman fell in a tiebreaker.

Albion's lone win in singles play came via Jacob Doyle, 6-1, 7-5.

The Britons will be back in action next Saturday when they host Greenville at 12:30 p.m.
