Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Yabs lifts MLAX to overtime win

The junior's game winning goal gave the Britons a win in their 2023 debut.

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – It took an extra minute and 36 seconds, but the Albion College men's lacrosse team won in dramatic fashion. Brock Yabs scored the game winning goal in overtime to lift the Brits over Otterbein University, 12-11.

Albion erased deficits of 4-0 and 11-10 to win their season opener on the road.

The Cardinals broke out to a 4-0 lead early on, taking Albion almost the first period to score. With 2:20 remaining in the opening quarter, Yabs found Ethan Rottell to get the Britons on the board. Less than a minute later, Rottell scored again, this one from Eddie Symons to cut the lead in half.

With 1:06 to play in the first, Rottell found Sam Puzevic to cut the Otterbein lead to 4-3 after one.

Continuing the 6-0 Briton run, junior Timmy Salinas evened the score at four with a goal to start the second quarter. Midway through the second, Yabs gave Albion a 5-4 lead with a goal off a feed from freshman Cal Stearns. Puzevic lifted the Brits to a 6-4 halftime advantage with three seconds on the clock.

The teams traded goals throughout the third period, as the visitors received goals from Stearns, Brendan Mercier and Robbie Dameron. Heading into the final 15 minutes, Albion clung to a 9-7 lead.

Otterbein scored three straight to open the fourth, taking a 10-9 lead with 10 minutes remaining. Rottell knotted the game at 10 with 4:44 on the clock, but the Cardinals responded one minute later.

With 2:49 to play, Mercier capitalized on a man-up opportunity, tying the game at 11. The sophomore's goal came off a pass from Puzevic.

Yabs, a junior, played the role of hero with the game-winner in overtime. His unassisted strike sent the Britons home victorious in their first contest of 2023.

Rottell led the Brits with three goals and two assists. Puzevic, Mercier and Yabs all added two goals apiece in the victory.

Albion had a sizable advantage in shots over the Cardinals, outshooting the hosts 57-37. The Brits were an efficient 15 of 16 on the clear, and were a perfect 3 for 3 in EMOs.

Symons had a solid day at the faceoff X, winning 16 of 27 opportunities and picking up 11 ground balls.

In goal, fifth year senior Jack Gogonis tallied 11 saves.

The Britons remain on the road on Feb. 24 when they head to Oberlin College. First face off is set for 4 p.m.
