Comeback falls just short in Florida opener

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – A late comeback came up just short, as the Albion College baseball team fell to the University of Dubuque, 5-4, in their Florida lid-lifter. In his first start, freshman Cole Giesige (0-1) struck out six over five innings of work. Giesige allowed five runs – just two earned – in the loss.

The Spartans cranked a leadoff home run in the home half of the first before the Britons were able to knot the game up at one in the top of the third. With two away, Mark Lauro reached on an error and a Matt McGann single advanced him to third. Sophomore Ryer Mazey smoked a single through the left side, plating Lauro and tying the game.

In the bottom of the third, Dubuque took a 4-1 lead thanks to three hits and one costly Albion error. Albion responded in the top of the fourth by getting one of those runs back. Carson Dunn bunted for a hit and moved into scoring position on an errant throw. After another Spartan error, Albion had runners at the corners for Gabe Mata. The junior delivered with a base hit through the left side, driving in Dunn.

Dubuque answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-2 lead.

Sophomore Austyn Stephens drove a one-out single up the middle in the eighth and moved to third when Braeden Emery crushed a ground rule double to the gap in right center. Dunn grounded out to short allowing Stephens to cross, as another Spartan error later led to a fourth Albion run. With one at bat left, the Britons trailed by one.

Dubuque threatened in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and one away. Calling upon Brayden Raether on two days rest proved to be the right move, as the sophomore struck out both hitters he faced to keep it a one run game

Albion went down in order in the top of the ninth.

The Britons will face Wartburg on Tuesday at 10:45 a.m.
