Game Recap: Baseball |

Tough ninth inning costs baseball

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – A devastating ninth inning cost the Albion College baseball team a shot at its first victory of the season, falling to Wartburg University 4-2. The Knights scored three in the top of the ninth to steal the win.

In the top of the third, Wartburg had a runner on third, helped by an Albion error. Following a walk, Scotty Clippert struck out the next batter looking for the second out of the frame. With runners at the corners, Clippert threw to first to pick off the runner. Mark Lauro threw the ball to second as the runner on third took off. Sophomore shortstop Ryker Mazy made a laser of a throw to the plate to nab the runner and end the threat.

Wartburg's first run of the game came in the top of the fifth, courtesy of a RBI groundout.

Albion plated both of its runs in the home half of the sixth. Patrick Merolla roped a double down the right field line and Matt McGann was hit by a pitch. With two away, the pair advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Jack Lasceski came through, sending a ground ball up the middle to drive in both runners and give the Britons the lead.

A leadoff walk followed by a sac bunt put the tying run in scoring position in the top of the ninth inning. After a comebacker off the Albion pitcher, the Knights had runners at the corners with one out. A well-struck ball found its way deep down the left field line, driving in both runners for a 3-2 Wartburg lead. One batter later, the Knights drove in an insurance run.

Albion brought the tying run to the plate thanks to a leadoff single by Austyn Stephens, but the Britons went down in order following the sophomore's at bat.

Albion struck out 11 times in the loss. Offensively, the Brits mustered just five hits – two from Merolla.

Sean Cooper threw two solid innings, striking out three. Clippert threw a strong four innings, fanning seven along the way.

The Britons will regroup following an off day Wednesday before playing Moravian in a twinbill on Thursday. Both games will have live stats available at gobrits.com.
