Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brits battle back, pick up huge conference win

Albion remains in the hunt to host a first round MIAA game.

ALBION – This round goes to the Brits.

After a chippy, intense, back and forth battle, the Albion College men's basketball team erased deficit after deficit, defeating Adrian College 83-78. Fred Garland scored seven of Albion's final eight points, including the go-ahead bucket with 1:23 on the clock.

Garland led all scorers with 21 points – his ninth 20+ point performance of the season. The junior added five assists and five rebounds to his stat line.

With 20 points, Jonathan Armstead-Wilkerson recorded a new career-high. He also swiped four steals and added four assists. AJ Barden finished with 10 points as well for the Britons.

Albion got ahead of the Bulldogs early on, leading by as many as 10 points. The visitors clawed their way back, eventually taking a 22-21 lead following an 11-0 run. For the remainder of the first half, Albion would cut into the lead, but could not overcome the small advantage. At the half, Adrian led 40-34.

Adrian held a slim lead for the first nine minutes of the new half. With 10:43 to play, Armstead-Wilkerson's jumper knotted the game at 54. Two possessions later, Barden had a huge block that led to an Albion basket. Freshman Nathan Steinman found a wide open Phil Ragan III, draining a three and lifting the Britons ahead, 57-54.

Despite the hosts building an eight point advantage, the Bulldogs once again had an answer. Adrian sank a 3-pointer with 2:19 to play, giving them a 78-77 lead and setting up an incredible finish.

Over the final two minutes, Garland took over, scoring the next seven points. With 22 seconds remaining, Adrian had one final look to tie the game, but a turnover gave the ball back to the Britons who picked up a much-needed win.

In his best game of the year, Steinman scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds and tacked on three assists. Freshmen Kameron Mayes (eight points) and Michael Calhoun (six rebounds) also shined, getting significant minutes.

Albion shot an efficient 22 of 30 from the foul line, led by Garland's 11 of 13 night.

The Britons collected 18 offensive rebounds, leading to 24 second chance points. Calhoun, Garland and Steinman all registered three or more offensive boards. Albion worked to keep the visitors off the glass, limiting Adrian to just six offensive rebounds.

With three league games remaining, Albion currently sits in fifth place, just one game behind Olivet.

On Saturday, the Brits head to Alma for a 3 p.m. tip off.
